Patient Care Technician (PCT)
COURSE TITLE: NUPC 1020-Patient Care Technician |
LENGTH: 24 online classroom hours (also includes a mandatory skills check-off) and 48 clinical hours (Approximately 5 weeks) |
COST: $375 Tuition + $165 Fees. Fees include one certification exam voucher to test with National Healthcareer Association. Fees do NOT include textbooks or supplies. |
Patient Care Technicians work under the supervision of healthcare professionals to assist with the critical day-to-day care of patients, typically in a hospital setting. They provide hands-on assistance to serve patients’ basic needs, which greatly impacts the lives of their patients and their patients’ families. As a PCT, you perform basic patient care (bathing, feeding, catheter care, etc.), complete safety checks and ensure cleanliness in patient rooms, accommodate any additional patient needs, obtain EKG readings and monitor vital signs, perform phlebotomy procedures, and provide emotional support to patients and families. Upon successful completion of this program, students are eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) national examination to get their certification. Certification is granted by the certifying organization after receiving a passing grade on the exam.
NOTE: This program is hybrid. Students must have reliable computer and internet access to complete the online content. |
For entry into the PCT program, applicants must show that they have successfully completed the following coursework: Electrocardiography (EKG), Phlebotomy (with sticks on live individuals), and Certified Nurse Aide. Valid certification as an EKG Technician, Phlebotomist, and/or CNA is acceptable as well. Should an applicant not have coursework or certification in some or all these areas, he/she may complete these programs at Navarro College and then enter the PCT program upon successful completion of all three credentials.
