Associate Degree Nursing Program

Traditional ADN applicants must meet all general program admission requirements including attendance at a program Information Session. Applications are due in February. Traditional applicants have two (2) prerequisite courses:

PREREQUISITE COURSES REQUIRED:

• BIOL 2401 – Anatomy & Physiology I (A&P I)

• BIOL 2402 – Anatomy & Physiology II (A&P II)

All prerequisites courses must be completed within 7 years of making application to the traditional ADN program. If you have completed BIOL 2401 or BIOL 2402 or both earlier than 7 years, you may take BIOL 2404 to satisfy the pre-requisite. This will be explained further in the virtual information session available after September 1st.

Applications sent without the required prerequisite will not be accepted. Any of the other Non-RNSG degree plan courses (Core Courses) on the degree plan can be taken prior to entering the program or after admission.

• BIOL 2420 - Microbiology

• PSYC 2301 - General Psychology

• PSYC 2314 - Lifespan Growth & Development

• ENGL 1301 - English Composition I

• Approved Fine Arts/Humanities (PHIL 2306 Intro to Ethics preferred)

ADN Degree Plans will be initiated upon admission to the ADN Program and will be changed if the student drops from the program. New students will be registered for the appropriate RNSG classes by ADN faculty. New students should register themselves for other required classes and, of course, select the schedule the student prefers. A calendar that details the RNSG course lecture, lab, and clinical schedules will be available to students prior to the start of the semester.

NOTICE TO STUDENTS REGARDING LICENSING (HB 1508)

Effective September 1st 2017, HB 1508 amends the Texas Occupations Code Section 53 that requires education providers to notify you a potential or enrolled student that a criminal history may make you ineligible for an occupational license upon program completion.

Any nursing applicant who has been arrested, convicted of a crime other than a minor traffic violation, diagnosed with, treated, or hospitalized in the past five years for schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, or borderline personality disorder, or addicted to or treated for the use of alcohol or any other drug within the past five years, must petition the Texas Board of Nursing for a declaratory order concerning their eligibility to take the licensing examination, the NCLEX-RN.

The application for a declaratory order can be downloaded from the BON website at https://www.bon.texas.gov/forms_declaratory_order.asp.html. This declaratory order must be completed and the eligibility letter received before the student starts nursing courses. If the case must be sent to the enforcement division, the processing may take up to 24 months. 

This information is being provided to all persons who apply or enroll in the program with notice of the requirements as described above, regardless of whether or not the person has been convicted of a criminal offense.

Additionally, HB 1508 authorizes licensing agencies to require reimbursements when a student fails to receive the required notice.
