He graduated from Corsicana High School and Navarro College before attending the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a BA degree in Chemistry.

He received his MD degree from the University of Texas Southwestern School in 1961.

He completed a residency in psychiatry at Duke Medical Center.

In 1972 he joined the staff of Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island as Clinical Director and later director of Education.

Became Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Brown University.

He later became Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the Miriam Hospital in Providence.

In 1979 he became Chief of Psychiatry at the VA Medical Center in Dallas and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he served until retiring in 2000.
